Peter Waters (1930 – 2003) organised the programme to salvage and restore the badly damaged books housed in the Biblioteca Nazionale Centralie di Firenze (BNCF) after the River Arno flooded in 1966. He, and an international cohort of trained binders and volunteers sought to contend with a mass of water, oil and mud damaged books and manuscripts.
The book contains appreciations both of Peter as a man and as a talented binder, both in creative work and in preservation. The whole is introduced by Randy Silverman.  A DVD of Roger Hill’s film, Restoration of Books, Florence, 1968’ is also included. This is very likely to be the definitive account of the immediate rescue of the BNCF collection post-flood, and is, like all previous Legacy Press publications, an outstanding feat of design and production, and is as such exceptionally good value.
